Katsura Sunshine completed his grueling traditional apprenticeship in Rakugo comic storytelling under the great Rakugo Master Katsura Bunshi VI in 2011.
His performances have delighted audiences throughout the world as well as all over Japan.
Sunshine has graced the Broadway stage with a different delightful Japanese story each month since 2019, at the famous New World Stages in Manhattan.
Now on tour in the United States and beyond!!

The Apprentices
(Performing with Sunshine)
In order to become a professional Rakugo storyteller or Rakugo-ka, one must undergo a strict three-year apprenticeship under a Rakugo Master.
I completed my apprenticeship under the Rakugo Master Katsura Bunshi VI in 2011.
All apprentices receive a Rakugo Family Name from their Masters, which consist of their family name, in my case "Katsura", and a given name which usually includes one Kanji Character in the Master's given name.
I have given all of my apprentices thus far the kanji 輝 which means "shine" and is the shine of my name 三輝 Sunshine.
So my Rakugo family looks like this:

Katsura Moonlight
桂陽輝
Katsura Sunlight

Katsura Sunflower
As well as performing Rakugo, the apprentices are learning Japanese instruments such as Taiko and Shamisen, used as part of the Rakugo performances.
My Rakugo family is pictured below. They perform with me on Broadway and in Tokyo, as well as on tour. Please say hello if you happen to see them!
